Between July and August 2025, Kenya recorded 468 deaths by suicide. News outlets quickly framed the numbers as a possible surge or even an epidemic. On an average day, about four people die by suicide in the country. During that two-month period, the number reportedly reached up to 30 a day over some weekends. Suicide now ranks as the fourth leading cause of death among young people in Kenya.
